Picnic at Woodhaugh
Undated
Oil on canvas
843mm x 1520mm
On Christmas Day 1863, Dunedin’s professional and business elite gathered at Woodhaugh for a memorable feast. A photographer captured this grand picnic and an unknown painter later committed the scene to canvas. Little is known about the men, women and children commemorated in the painting, which today survives in the Otago Settlers Museum’s collection of early Otago art works. However the painting typifies the prized works presented to the Museum over the years and its standing as a repository for works such as these.
